When did you get your first bass?
I was thirteen - I had to sell half my comic book collection to make it happen and my parents helped. Thanks Dad! It was a Peavey Fury, P-Bass copy. I sold it some years back to make froom for more gear.
What made you want to play?
I had been playing my older brother's guitar for a few years and
learning what I could from him. I was playing trumpet in shcool
band at that time but wanted to play an electric instrument or drums.
I probably would have started on drums if not for the simplicity
of a stringed instrument - less to buy and maintain for a 13-year-old
boy!
Who are your influences?
My biggest influences are historical figures in rock/pop: Duck Dunn, Chuck Rainey, Ron Carter, James Jamerson, Carole Kaye, John Paul Jones, Berry Oakley and Verdine White. There are a lot of great bassists in the local scene here in Houston.

What gear do you use?
I prefer tube amps. I own two early '70s SVT heads that I swear by. They don't make'em like that anymore. I have various sizes of Ampeg cabinets depending on the size of the room, but I'm open to alternatives as far as the speaker cabinets. There's a lot of great gear on the market these days. I prefer old-fashioned, passive electronic basses. I use a stock P and a stock J Bass, both make in the 1990s. Effects are not crucial to me, but I do own a few. I use my Octaver more that anything.
What was your favorite gig ever?
Had a great time in Missouri - and I DIDN'T spill any BBQ sauce on my pants.
Name some famous encounters?
Once, when I was about 7, Dusty Hill was among the few passengers on a 747 coming into Houston from LA - my family was coming to Texas to visit family and Dusty said hello to my Aunt. I imagine Dusty took one look at me and thought to himself, "That goofy little F#*&er is gonna be one hell of a bass player one day."
